Flashback to Willowbrook
This weekend, Geraldo Rivera presents “The Waiting List: America’s Healthcare Crisis” on the Fox Network. The news report will document the lives of the hundreds of thousands of Americans with disabilities who have been waiting years for government services, unable to receive the help to which they are entitled
In 1972, Rivera brought television cameras inside the Willowbrook State School on New York’s Staten Island and filmed the widespread abuse and neglect occurring there. The institution then housed more than 5,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His reports led to government investigations of the institution, which was eventually shut down.
In preparation for tomorrow’s broadcast, Rivera posted the following videos. They include some of the original Willowbrook footage.
