Disability advocates sue California over highway access
September 17th, 2009From the Los Angeles Times:
Civil rights advocates have launched a class action lawsuit against California’s highway agency, charging that the state has violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by failing to make required improvements in accessibility when sidewalks and roads are built or repaired.
Advocates say the state failed to install required wheelchair ramps in about 1,000 cases, and has also failed to install warnings such as bumps that blind people can feel underfoot. They say the violations jeopardize the safety of people with disabilities, like wheelchair users who are forced to detour onto streets where they risk being hit by vehicles.
