Racehorse promotes autism awareness
July 11th, 2009
From the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, NBC Sports:
A racehorse named “Autism Awareness” will compete today in the $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup Grade 1 racing event.
“We believe he has the potential to be a Grade 1 winner,” said owner Johnny Taboada, who bought the horse for $1,000 as a yearling in 2006 and chose the name because his younger son, Renzo, has the condition. “He has something we can’t explain; the horse is here for a reason, and it’s a bigger purpose than racing.”
Autism Awareness has won just four of 22 starts, but the two stakes victories have earned $281,745 while helping the Taboada family promote awareness of the developmental disability that affects children.
