Parents: Washington disability employment policy goes too far
July 10th, 2009‘Developmentally disabled, unable to speak … ready to work?’
From Seattle Weekly:
In the state of Washington, public funding for adults with developmental disabilities is devoted to helping people find and keep jobs. But critics say the state is taking inclusion too far, ignoring the needs of those whose impairments are more severe.
“It’s their agenda,” one mother says of government officials. “It’s not my daughter’s agenda.”
The state initiated the policy to protect the civil rights of people with intellectual disabilities by moving them from sheltered workshops, giving them the opportunity to work and earn a real wage. Some parents say the policy leaves families to choose between institutionalization or waiting in limbo for a job.
