Case of autistic marine highlights recruitment lapses

July 6th, 2009

‘Faced with quotas, a few recruiters are taking shortcuts that allow those unfit for service into the military’

From the Los Angeles Times:

Marine Joshua Fry, 21, is facing court-martial. His recruiter is under investigation for enlisting the young man, who has autism.

Far from being a routine instance of a young man unable to adjust to military life, the Fry case has exposed an awkward issue for the Marines and other military services: Recruiters sometimes take ethical shortcuts to make their quotas at a time when Americans have tired of the nation’s wars and finding recruits is difficult.

Fry enlisted in the military while living in a group home in Irvine, California. His grandmother, who is his legal conservator, says he should never have been allowed to enlist without her approval.

Personally I think no matter what disability you have, you should be able to serve in the military as long as you have a talent and can serve in some way
