300 gather to support disabled teen after violent attack
June 18th, 2009Seattle police say Hannah Geiger was the victim of a hate crime
From the Seattle Times, KOMO-TV:
Crowds rallied in Seattle to celebrate the life of Hannah Geiger, a 19-year-old Special Olympics athlete, two weeks after she was beaten unconscious near her home by men who accosted her because of her race and disability. No arrests have been made.
… And the crowd shouted: “Hannah!”
For the first time since she was thrust into the local spotlight after surviving what police say was a violent hate crime, Geiger’s game face cracked into an embarrassed, but resolute, smile.

Excellent post. It seems like these days the only people not covered by political correctness (which is, basically, just common courtesy) are people with disabilities.

As long as there are places on the Internet that promote hatred of people with disabilities; as long as it is deemed, ‘acceptable,’ by major corporations to use terminology such as, ‘retard,’ and other demeaning terms in association with people with disabilities — there will be a continued perception among some members of society that hate crimes against persons with disabilities are somehow justified.
As long as our very own government continues to ignore the very term, ‘disability,’ in relation to the number one concern of people with disabilities, health care reform, this very same perception that people with disabilities are somehow, ‘less-than,’ will persist.
Such perceptions and practices are completely unacceptable in American Society today.
