High school grad with DS wins part on Fox show

Lauren Potter, a graduate of Riverside’s Poly High School, has landed a part in an episode of the new Fox TV series “Glee,” which premieres this fall. Lauren has Down syndrome.
The series follows a high school teacher who tries to transform a school glee club to its former glory. Lauren plays a sophomore who tries out for the cheerleading squad.
Lauren enjoyed the two-day shoot but said it bothered her that when people looked at her, they first saw the Down syndrome.
“It’s really hard for me when people see me as a Down syndrome kid,” she said. “I want them to see me as typical.”
