‘Mad pride’ movement challenges views of mental illness

A budding grassroots movement of activists is trying to change the treatment and stigma attached to mental illness, celebrating unusual ways of processing information and emotion. They maintain that the medical establishment has relied too heavily on medication and the repression of those deemed to be “not normal.”
Critics argue that medication is indispensable for people with bipolar disease, schiphrenia and other conditions.
