Mel Levine gives up medical license amid abuse charges
March 20th, 2009
From the New York Times, Boston Globe:
Melvin D. Levine, a pediatrician and best-selling author of books about learning disabilities, has surrendered his medical license amid charges of sexually abusing as many as 50 boys.
Levine signed an agreement with the medical board of North Carolina that bars him from ever again practicing medicine anywhere in the world.
“Dr Levine admits that the board has evidence to support the accusation that he conducted inappropriate examinations,” said Thomas Mansfield, legal director of the North Carolina Medical Board.
… In the agreement, Levine denied doing anything wrong, but the medical board said that it was prepared to present evidence at a hearing that he performed unnecessary genital exams on five patients in North Carolina, each of which was conducted outside the presence of a parent or guardian.
… Dr. Levine’s lawyer, Alan Schneider, said, “He continues to adamantly deny the allegations.”
Levine is the author of “A Mind at a Time” and other books on learning disabilities. Complaints about him date back more than two decades.
