Kareem Dale to White House arts post

March 16th, 2009

From the New York Times, Chronicle of Higher Education:

Kareem Dale, who last month was named special assistant to the president for disability policy, has now been chosen for a newly established White House staff position overseeing arts and culture, an unnamed White House official has confirmed.

There was no word on whether Dale would continue overseeing disability policy. Dale, who is partly blind, had served as national disability director for the Obama campaign.

  1. Sandra Says:

HLAA members along with other disbility groups met with Kareem recently to voice concerns raise issues and bacsically gave him a feast to digest. Very wise appointment to have someone who understands our concerns with heart.

  2. Sandra Goodwick Says:

I was invited to the LA town hall meeting by Kareem Dale. (I have Moebius syndrome — a congenital oculofacial paralysis, and a mild-moderate hearing loss requiring aides.

In addition, I have been a teacher for 36 years (past 15 in special ed, the rest in general ed) and have been very interested in disability awareness because of both my own experiences in having a facial paralysis as well as being a “special ed” teacher and noting the various subtle (and not so subtle) discriminatory actions/decision.

I wrote Kareem Dale to thank him (and suggest awareness re: assistive listening devices since they had none; even though I received preferential seating in the 3rd row I could not discern any of the questions.)

Obama’s special olympics comment (and finding two absolutely opposite commentaries) kind of shoved me to write more than “just” a “thank you and please get ALD’s next time) letter.

I do wonder what this appointment means for this particular position. I would hope that if Dale vacates the position, Obama finds someone else who understands disability issues very thoroughly.
