Class action suit alleges abuse at Canadian school for the deaf
March 11th, 2009From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Saskatoon StarPhoenix:
Former students of a now-closed school for the deaf have filed a class action lawsuit against the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, alleging they were abused at the government-funded residential school.
Lawyer Tony Merchant said he represents 52 people, including the two individual plaintiffs named in the claim, who attended the R.J.D. Williams Provincial School for the Deaf in Saskatoon.
Merchant said the students were victims of sexual and physical assaults by employees of the school and other students. He said the victims were unable to report the abuse because the school had complete control over their lives.
