Teammates welcome wrestler with Down syndrome
February 21st, 2009
From the Las Vegas Sun:
Billy Wolfbrandt, 14, who has Down syndrome, shows enthusiasm and dedication when he competes on the wrestling team at Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School in Las Vegas.
Wolfbrandt is one of four students with disabilities at his school who are included in regular classroom environments and in extracurricular activities. He competes in both football and wrestling.
Last season, the school’s wrestling coaches informed opposing teams of Wolfbrandt’s condition so his opponents would compete at half speed. But this year, opponents wrestle him the same as any other team member.
“It’s been a thrill seeing him wrestle,” Wolfbrandt’s father, Lew Wolfbrandt, said. “Everyone has been so accepting of him and he’s just had a blast doing it.”
