CA developmental disability spending up sharply; Cuts sought
February 11th, 2009From the Riverside [CA] Press-Enterprise:
State spending for Californians with developmental disabilities has nearly quadrupled over the past decade, growing from $713.6 million in 1999 to $2.8 billion last year.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget plan has described the growth as “unsustainable,” and called for sharp cuts over the coming year. The state is facing an unprecedented $40 billion budget shortfall.
Program advocates say any large reductions would hurt people who are mentally disabled, have cerebral palsy or other developmental disabilities as well as their families, particularly amid a sharp rise in the number of parents seeking help for children with autism.
