U.S. media missing from Special Olympics World Winter Games

February 10th, 2009

The lack of US media attention on the Special Olympics World Winter Games being held in Idaho, which is hosting nearly 2,000 athletes from 96 countries, baffles international reporters and organizers.

Walter Goverde from a Dutch documentary crew said the absence of the US media was “very strange” considering his team came all the way from Europe. He asked, “The American media doesn’t have any interest?”

Tim Shriver, CEO of Special Olympics International, said “The country’s very distracted right now. There’s a lot on people’s minds. There’s a lot of news coming out of Washington and New York, and there’s a certain focus on those things. It’s too bad because I think a lot of people would be delighted to see there’s a message here about what you do in a crisis. There’s a message here about what a crisis affords you the opportunity to do, to think differently, to change paradigm, to reinvent yourself in some respect … so, we just have to keep telling our story the best we can, and we hope people will come and pay attention. When they don’t, we’re frustrated and disappointed, but it doesn’t change the fact that the story is the best story out there.”

I totally agree! I was so frustrated I wrote a blog about this and sent the contents of the blog to ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN. I couldn’t find the contact information for FOX news.

I am not plugging my site as this is time for the Special Olympians to be recognized and not me, but please feel free to share any part of my writings from http://www.xanga.com/beringer5/692264125/shame-on-you/

SHAME on the media for not recognizing these individuals! I want more and more people to realize the wrong doings of the national media.

Thank you for sharing and posting your comments

  2. Johanna Allen Says:

How is it that the execs at Dreamworks know how to motivate us as unwitting grass roots marketing for “Tropic Thunder,” yet as a community we have no ability to mobilize behind and promote of our own (positive) events? Such a shame that the Winter World Games held here in the USA are going unnoticed by the USA. What can we do to change this?

  3. Elisabeth's Mom Says:

Another outrage! There is absolutely no excuse!

I would bold cap but I undertand that would be more morally offensive to some than when our children are only visible as props for mercenary purposes.

This makes me want to cry. We have so much road to cover, so many success stories to tell, and what does the media ever do for our children?
