Advocates press for end to school seclusion, prone restraint
January 14th, 2009From the Associated Press, Connecticut Post:
A disability rights group released a report yesterday saying that children across the country, many with disabilities, have been injured or killed when they were restrained or secluded at school.
The National Disability Rights Network called for a ban on seclusion and prone restraint. The group said approximately 40 percent of states have no laws, policies or guidelines concerning the use of restraint and seclusion in schools. It said its report is “just the tip of the iceberg” because the government doesn’t have any system of collecting data about abuses.
Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, said he would schedule a hearing on the issue.
