From the New York Times and the New York Post:
The new film “Yonkers Joe” spins the tale of a gambler trying to pull off a risky score while accompanied by his son with Down syndrome. The young man has just been ejected from an institution.
From Stephen Holden in the New York Times:
Joe Jr., convincingly played by Tom Guiry, is an unmanageable handful who acts out every impulse. Resentful of his father for ignoring him during a hospitalization that began when his mother abandoned the family, he lashes out in wild-animal tantrums whenever he is thwarted.
In the New York Post, Lou Lumenick praises the performance of actors Chazz Palminteri and Christine Lahti, but adds:
“Unfortunately, that’s not true about Palminteri’s mentally challenged son, overplayed with an excess of tics — what “Tropic Thunder” dubbed “full retard” — by Thomas Guiry.”

Just what we need — a portrayal of all the negative conceptions of individuals with Down syndrome.
