Minnesotan is oldest living man with Down syndrome
January 5th, 2009
From the Mankato [MN] Free Press, AP/Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Waseca [MN] County News:
An 80-year-old man from Waseca, Minnesota, has been recognized by the Guinness World Records for being the oldest known person with Down syndrome. Bert Holbrook (left) lives in a group home with several other residents.
At the time he was born, people with Down syndrome lived to an average age of nine years, institutions were the norm and medical care was minimal. But Holbrook thrived in the Waseca community where he lived with his parents and older sister, and helped out in the family grocery store.

Hi, I am a disability support worker and work in a residence here in Australia, where there are many older down syndrome clients. Our oldest is a 74 year old man. He is a real sweety. Has many health problems…eyesight, mobility, slow heartrate…even Charles Bonnet syndrome. But the dear old man keeps on keeping on and never changes much at all, its a pleasure to look after him!

My name is Matt and I wanted to thank you for your blog and your comments. I spent nearly four years working in an Alzheimer’s/Long Term Care facility in Utah. I personally got to know a 70-something year old man with Down Syndrome. He was an amazing person and appeared to be very healthy the last I saw him. It was good for him to have a place to stay where he could receive the attention he needed.
