New DS tests could spur more abortions, less family aid
December 8th, 2008From Newsweek:
Next year, new prenatal tests for Down syndrome may start arriving in doctors’ offices. Unlike the tests currently used, these are promising to provide accurate results with no risk of miscarriage. If they become common, they could result in more diagnoses, more abortions, and a drop in support for people with Down syndrome and their families.
Even as technology has advanced, doctors’ education about Down syndrome has lagged behind. Many doctors are unaware of medical and educational advances that have allowed some people with Down syndrome to graduate from high school and hold jobs.
A bill calling on doctors to provide “accurate and up-to-date information” about Down syndrome passed in September after the announcement that the new prenatal tests are expected to become widely available in 2009. The new law does not include funding.
