Adults with developmental disabilities wait years for homes
December 2nd, 2008From the [NJ] Star-Ledger:
Letters sent recently by the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities provided a stark reminder to parents that their adult children face devastating waits for community housing. After three years on the priority list, Robyn Fox is ranked 3,692 among 4,601 people who need a home.
Parents say they are frustrated by the lack of progress. Typically, people are moved up on the list only in “emergency” situations, such as when a parent gets sick or dies. They often end up in large “developmental centers” instead of being able to live in smaller settings in the community .
