Opinion: Fellow Wasilla mom says Palin putting kids at risk

September 5th, 2008

Writing in the Seattle Times, guest columnist Dena Fox says GOP vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin is not demonstrating family values when she puts her own political ambitions ahead of the needs of her family, particularly Trig (who has Down syndrome) and Bristol (who is pregnant).

Fox is an evangelical Christian, a resident of Wasilla, Alaska, and the mother of a son with Down syndrome. She challenges the support Palin has been getting from evangelical leaders for her “pro-life and pro-family values” positions.

Over the past 11 years, I have learned that a child with Down syndrome requires somewhat more time, instruction and advocacy than my other children.

These demands have been intense, but the rewards just as great. I agree with Governor Palin’s assessment that her son is a gift and God’s will for her life.

But if it is God’s will that Sarah and Todd Palin raise a child with Down syndrome, it seems just as clear to me that God would will Sarah and Todd to be physically available to hold him, care for him, and — over the next twenty-plus years — raise him.

… Palin may be a fine politician, but hers is not the example of Christian family values my family strives to live by, nor is hers the model of family values I want my family to emulate.

    Thank you Ellen.

And no parent has 100% control over their kids.

I am sure Bristol knew she was risking pregnancy when she did what she did.

The nice thing is the Palins do not treat it like the end of the world.

They will pitch in and help.

There will be no abortions and no welfare! That’s how it should be, real family values.

  2. NH Says:

The more I read on this website the more I know you lefties are jealous nutcases.

SHAME ON YOU for your double standards.

I am sure there will be plenty of support for all her children while she is Veep.

    And president too!

  3. Marcus Says:

Dena wrote a fantastic article! It takes courage to take such a bold (and correct) stand which will surely prove unpopular with the political evangelicals. I believe in Christian family values and sweeping things like Bristol’s pregnancy under the rug is not the way to go.

This is the time the church needs to make a stand and be firm in what true family values are, not be wishy-washy because it might hurt the feelings of our VP and my governor.

    God bless.

  4. Ellen Says:

Dena Fox should not presume to know what God’s will is for another person.

People with “pro-life and pro-family” values are in a Catch-22 position … if they stay home to raise families they can’t affect high level changes and if they get involved outside the home to make changes they are called hypocrites.
