It is always hard to see whose rights Conservatives protect: those of the most vulnerable, or the least vulnerable. With a remark like 'I was grateful to have those months to prepare' my guess would be the latter. Makers of prenatal tests (like Sequenom) regard women that refuse testing on moral, religious or other grounds a major risk to unbridled profits.

As a mother of two children with Down syndrome (both my biological children) I can add: my first pregnancy, without screening was bliss because I only focused on becoming a mom. My second pregnancy, after screening, was less than bliss because I found myself constantly explaining, defending, why I did not terminate my pregnancy.

I can imagine many women, who aren't lucky to already know the joys of parenting a child with Down syndrome, cannot withstand the pressure put on by society, health providers and even 'friends'.
