Virginia families seeking more support for people with autism
August 28th, 2008
From the Washington Post:
Christopher and Theresa Waddell of Arlington, Virginia, have three children. Two have autism. They’re concerned about their state’s lengthy waiting list for services, and worry about the lack of supports available for adults with autism in their state.
Parents like the Waddells would like to see Virginia change its funding structure, to make more support available to people with autism both now and in the future. They’re pushing for the state to mandate insurance coverage for behavior therapy for autism.
At the federal level, they’re looking for more funding for autism as well as an amendment to the tax code that would provide for the establishment of financial security accounts for the care of people with disabilities.
“We’re struggling with what this picture is going to look like when they do reach adulthood,” said Theresa Waddell (with Paul, above).”It’s never too early to start really planning this.”
