Son with autism left on school bus; Parents sue
August 6th, 2008From the Newark Star-Ledger:
Parents of a New Jersey boy who was abandoned for 4-1/2 hours in a hot school bus in July, 2003, have filed suit against the school transportation department.
Tyler Mellito, now 9, was left strapped in a car seat in a parked bus. He was supposed to have been dropped off at a summer program for children with autism in affluent Hunterdon County. His parents argued in the lawsuit that the Hunterdon Center/Flemington-Raritan School District Joint Transportation Department was negligent in supervising their child.
The suit alleged that Tyler suffered severe and permanent injuries, as well as mental anguish, and that he requires medical attention into the future.
