Racing together
July 25th, 2008
From the [Newark, NJ] Star-Ledger:
Ted Kucowski and his eight-year-old son Brandon support each other and redefine physical limits by competing in triathlons together (photo left). Brandon, who has a rare developmental disorder, is considered a quadriplegic.
“It seems like ever since (we’ve raced together), we don’t let Brandon’s disability hold us back at all,” Kucowski said. “We go out and do everyday things that everyday people do. We’re hoping to inspire other people to get out and do the same.”
[The Kucowskis were inspired by] an online video clip of Dick and Rick Hoyt, a father-son team from Massachusetts that has competed in triathlons together for 27 years. Rick is also unable to walk or talk, as the result of the umbilical cord temporarily cutting off oxygen to his brain during birth, but he received his degree from Boston University and has competed in 977 athletic events worldwide with his father.

Related story from the [Salt Lake City, Utah] Deseret News:
Brian Benchley, who is quadriplegic, and his longtime friend Tyler Sorenson, both 31, race together to finish in the top third of the marathons in which they have competed.
Sorenson says, “Along the routes, you see it in some people, we’re causing them to think what impossible thing they can do,” he said.
