Woman overcomes hurdles to open her own business
July 25th, 2008From the Cape Cod Times:
Tracey Newhart, 25, who has Down syndrome, celebrates the opening of her own baked goods shop in East Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Five years ago, Newhart received media attention when she was unable to graduate from high school after failing a required state exam. Although she eventually passed the test, the delay meant she missed the opportunity to study culinary arts at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island.
Newhart, who had been cooking since age 5, remained passionate about cooking and decided to start her own business after delivering baked goods to her neighbors for four years. She makes eight types of candy bars, and even dog treats. Pies are her specialty.
