Disability rights advocates rally in Washington
July 23rd, 2008From NBC4, Washington, D.C.:
An estimated 700 disability rights advocates rallied in Washington Tuesday to mark the 18th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and to support revisions in the law that would broaden the its reach. Court decisions over the years have narrowed the range of disabilities covered under the ADA.
Among the crowd of supporters were people using oxygen tanks and wheelchairs. “Look at these people. I mean, they are making a full and productive life despite a serious disability,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. “We’ve got to make sure in America, if we’re truly a land of opportunity, we don’t leave anybody behind.”
Community and business groups and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have joined the disability community in supporting the ADA Amendments Act, which has passed the House.
