Columnist: Sarah Palin should be on McCain short list

July 20th, 2008

Chris Cillizza, author of the Washington Post politics blog “The Fix,” offers Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a possible running mate for John McCain.

Cillizza characterizes Palin as a “Hail Mary” option — someone the candidate might choose if he “believes that he has to shake up the race with an entirely unexpected and unorthodox choice that would carry great reward and great risk.” (At left, Palin and her youngest son, Trig.)

…[Palin's] story — former high school basketball star and beauty queen, mother of five including a newborn with Down’s Syndrome — is the sort of narrative American voters could fall in love with. Plus, picking Palin would send a message to disaffected Democratic-leaning women that McCain is paying more than lip service to the notion of changing the face of the Republican party.

Palin ranks number five on Cillizza’s list. Higher-ranked choices, in order, are: former governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, former Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio and South Dakota Sen. John Thune.

Here’s the theme song when Sarah Palin makes her Veep center stage appearance at the Republican National Convention later this summer:

Oh, and yes it IS gonna be Palin. McCain’s already got this new ad up which essentially announces Palin as his pick — without ever having to mention her name.

It’s even got the McCain/Palin campaign slogan vs. Obama: “Don’t hope for new energy, vote for it.”

Cillizza, who favors Obama or a Dem winning in November, tried to keep Palin off the top five until now. However, now, to retain any credibility whatsoever, he HAD to include her. But keeping her at No. 5 instead of Nos. 1 or 2 confirms he still wants to bury Palin as much as he can. He knows that Palin as Veep will land McCain and the GOP in the White House, so of course, he’ll continue to downplay Palin all he can. Palin clearly merits the No. 1 spot now, but Cillizza not even naming her nos. 2 or even 3, shows he’s in the tank for, and more than wants, the Dems and Obama winning in November.
