Presidential forum on disabilities planned

July 11th, 2008

From Fox Business:

A coalition of disability advocacy groups has invited John McCain and Barack Obama to appear at a non-partisan presidential forum on Saturday, July 26, in Columbus, Ohio.

Plans call for the panel to be moderated by television journalist Judy Woodruff. The event is being organized by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and the Ohio Disability Vote Coalition, which represents nearly 30 advocacy organizations from across the state. Another 70 organizations are participating.

There has been no word on whether either presidential candidate has accepted the invitation to appear.

According to AAPD figures, more than 40 million people with disabilities are eligible to vote in the U.S. “People with disabilities and our family members represent a huge percentage of the voting population and we respond to candidates who address our issues,” said Andrew Imparato, president of the AAPD.

The date of the event was chosen to coincide with the 18th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
