Kids’ autism shown to affect parents’ employment
July 9th, 2008A study by Guillermo Montes and Jill S. Halterman in the current issue of the journal Pediatrics reports that having a child with autism can put pressure on parents’ working situation.
Among parents of children with diagnosed autism spectrum disorders, the authors said 39 percent reported that someone in the family had quit a job, not taken a job, or greatly changed a job because of child care problems related to the child with autism within the previous year.
They found that the employment impact of a child with ASD was three times larger than the effect of poverty, and seven times greater than the employment impact of typically developing children.
“Given that families of children with ASD face substantial additional health care expenses, the impact of child care problems on the economy of families with a child with ASD may be even more significant than for other families,” the study said.
