Ohio groups consider dropping ‘retardation’
July 6th, 2008From the Dayton Daily News:
Ohio groups representing people with intellectual disabilities are considering removing the words “mental retardation” from their names and asking the state’s Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to do the same.
Ohio is one of only eight states that still uses the term in the name of its statewide governmental department.
At issue, according to a state-issued newsletter, is “the perception that modern usage of the slang variant, ‘retard,’ has a demeaning connotation and negates the legitimate use of the word ‘retardation.’”
