Mom challenges stereotypes about spinal cord injuries
June 24th, 2008From the Toronto Star:
People with disabilities can be capable and successful parents with the help of appropriate resources and support services, according to a groundbreaking study presented to an international rehabilitation conference in Toronto.
Anita Kaiser, the report’s author, is one of about 36,000 Canadians who are living with spinal cord injuries. She gave birth to daughter Olivia five months ago. Her report looked at experiences of parents with spinal cord injuries, including social attitudes and the physical challenges of caring for a child.
“Having children seems to magnify a disability,” said Kaiser, who received a scholarship for her studies from the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Without suitable information, contact with other parents facing the same challenges and devices to help, “you are compromised in many ways.”
An extended feature about Kaiser is here:
“I always wanted to have kids and I knew we could do it,” she says. “There’s no reason a woman with a spinal cord injury can’t go on to bear children.
