‘Mom upset over seating snafu’
June 18th, 2008
From the Wichita Falls, Texas, Times Record News:
A mother in Wichita Falls, Texas, says her child was denied accessible seating at a Cinemark movie theater when a nondisabled patron refused to move from the seat and the theater manager said company policy did not permit her to ask the patron to move.
Krista Leal said she was angry and sad that the theater wasn’t more supportive of patrons with disabilities. Her 2-year-old son, Levi, uses a wheelchair.
James Meredith, vice president of marketing and communications at Cinemark’s corporate office in Plano, Texas, said that the company does provide designated seating for patrons with handicaps, but “We cannot physically move somebody from their seat. It’s not like a parking space,” he said. “The seating, Cinemark sets up especially for their handicapped customers. Unfortunately, if somebody’s sitting there … we rely on their conscience and decency.”
