Report: Virginia falling short in serving youth with disabilities
June 17th, 2008Associated Press/Richmond Times Dispatch:
Virginia has too many young people with disabilities still in institutions, said a report issued today by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities. The board said the lack of available services in the community was pressuring families into putting their children into institutions.
“Families should never have to make the difficult decision to place their children in an institutional setting because they cannot obtain the services and supports they need,” said the report…
Among other findings, the report said the state is not providing an adequate level of academic support or maintaining appropriate expectations for students in special education. The board advises the governor, state health officials and lawmakers.
