Small business owners in SF rail against ADA lawsuits
June 15th, 2008From SF Gate, the website of the San Francisco Chronicle:
Small business owners in the San Francisco area are complaining about a rash of accessibility lawsuits brought under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Many of the lawsuits are being filed by a handful of disabled plaintiffs who are represented by the same lawyer. Thomas Frankovich has built a multi-million dollar business in ADA suits, and was featured in a San Francisco Weekly cover story last year called “Wheelchairs of Fortune.”
Critics say California law offers financial incentives for frivolous lawsuits, while disability rights advocate say the suits are necessary to assure access. Local merchants are trying to organize.
