Shortage of teachers for blind, visually impaired students
June 14th, 2008From the St. Charles Journal [suburban St. Louis]:
Finding teachers for blind or visually impaired children has become increasingly difficult, particularly in rural areas.
Rates of child blindness are up because more premature infants are surviving, many with cortical visual impairments caused by brain damage. At the same time, skilled teachers are retiring in large numbers and new teachers are not choosing to join the field.
St. Louis-area districts have responded by offering certification incentives and retraining opportunities for teachers.
