Alaska governor sees ‘perfection’ in her new baby

May 3rd, 2008

From the Associated Press:

Alaska governor Sarah Palin says she was initially “shocked” upon getting the prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome for her fifth child when she was four months pregnant. But she and her husband Todd (with baby Trig, left) never considered terminating the pregnancy

Once her husband got the news, he told her: “We shouldn’t be asking, ‘Why us?’ We should be saying, ‘Well, why not us?’”

… “We’ve both been very vocal about being pro-life,” Palin said. “We understand that every innocent life has wonderful potential.”

… “I’m looking at him right now, and I see perfection,” Palin said. “Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?”

Trig Paxon Van Palin was born on April 18, and Palin went back to work three days later. Her implicit message: that a child with special needs would not hinder her professional commitments.

“There is no reason to believe a woman can’t do it with a growing family,” she said. “My baby will not be at all or in any sense neglected.”

I am amazed that this chain of comments. Do modern women really think women are incapable of being mothers and career driven? How many other countries in the world have female leaders? The idea that this is in question is absurd. The fact is many families in America (mine included) have both parents working and the kids grow up fine. The nuclear family is not that of the 1950’s anymore. Those that are questioning whether to vote Dem or Rep because of this seriously need to re-evaluate their priorities in a political leader.

“How can a woman of five children seek office? ”

Wowzer. Great job, assuming a woman can’t handle a family AND a difficult job. Just because you don’t think you can do it, doesn’t mean that some other woman/women can’t.

But hey, way to bring down our gender.

I have to agree with your comments. And I am a Democrat!

Was she pregnant or was it her 16 year old daughter? Not sure but we will find out

  6. Joe Says:

Appararently, Trig is actually Palin’s grandson. Her 17 year old daughter Bristol missed months of school that year while everyone noted that the governor didn’t even look pregnant. Nice cover up.

  7. Martin Says:

There are rumors that Sarah Palin’s fifth child is really her daughter’s child. I hope that the Governor has not resorted to dishonesty to cover up her daughter’s pregnancy. I’m providing a link below that makes the case that Trig is not Palin’s daughter. I hope for the family’s sake that the information at this link is wrong.

well, maybe her multi-tasking skills are first rate. she can push ‘the button,’ with one hand, burp the baby with the other while cutting dagger eyes at yet one more enemy she’ll earn.

  9. Danielle Says:

In response to the post by Kathryn Roberts. Yes, her husband is capable. He’s capable of helping out with the kids while she goes to work. How many male presidential or vice presidential candidates have run for office despite the fact that they had kids? It’s ok for men but not for women? Maybe her children are SO important to her that she will actively work towards securing a good future for their whole generation by running for VP of the USA. If you are in a position to make a difference for your family on a larger scale, maybe it’s not so fair of us to judge her for taking that opportunity.

  10. Libby Says:

I would just like to point out that Michelle Obama has worked most of her life, including after she had children. She quit working to support her husband’s race for President. Michelle Obama did not quit working to become a housewife and full time mother.

Mrs. Palin’s husband is willing to take care of the kids, what is the difference? It does not mean she will be absent from her children’s lives anymore than any other working parent

Is this really your business anyway.

Vote for the candidate you want, but don’t try to convince others to adopt your viewpoint that this candidate is neglecting her family. Many may try but I doubt they will succeed in this effort. The entire attitude brings up images of the Saudi Arabian Olympic team. No women, because they are not allowed to play sports. They can only take care of their men and children. Don’t think America is ready to go there.

  11. Independent Massachusetts Mom Says:

    You GO GIRL!!!

I am a single (not by choice) Mom from Massachusetts. I own my own business, mow my own lawn, wash my own dishes, home School my own children. I tell my daughter she can be anything no matter what she faces in life!!!

Glory to GOD!!! YOU GO GIRL!! I’m voting for YOU!

  12. Courtney Says:

I think Sarah Palin is a great candidate. She was given the opportunity to prove that she acts, not just speaks. Her children will be well taken care of by her husband when she is working. Just because it isn’t the traditional set-up doesn’t mean it is wrong. I mow the lawn and my husband washes dishes, not traditional, but it is what we prefer!!

Furthermore, as for seeking a difficult job, it might be hard to understand, but some people feel drawn or destined to fill a certain position in this life. It is likely that she is filling a certain role at this time because she is the right person for the job. Good Luck Sarah, with you on the ticket I feel comfortable voting this year.

  13. Liz Says:

I feel you on this. You should look deeply at your own family values and look at the candidates and see who represents those values, and decide.

I believe women can do any work a man can, but we are offered opportunities to choose to balance this, right? You can have it all in your life…but can you really have it all simultaneously?

I admire Ms. Palin, but I admire the wives on the Democratic ticket SO much this year. I relate to them. They both have advanced degrees, but they have both chosen in turns to stay home or to work part time (or on a school schedule until their kids were old enough) that has enabled them to be fully involved parents. Just look at the Obama children and Biden grandchildren…they seem happy and so well-adjusted and at ease.

And McCain with his philandering…he deserves honor as a vet…but he will get no more than that from me. Republicans pay lip service to values but do nothing practical to serve them.

  14. Kathryn Roberts Says:

How can a woman of five children seek office? How can a woman who says her children are important to her (and one of them is handicapped and needs her even more), leave her children and go to work, when her husband is capable …. and she even picks one of the busiest hardest jobs she could possibly find???
I have always been a conservative. Never at any point in my life have I even glimpsed at the Democrat side of the ballet when it comes to voting … but if this is the kind of person that will be running, how can I, in good conscience vote conservative?
