Alaska governor confirms son has Down syndrome
April 21st, 2008
From the Anchorage Daily News:
Gov. Sarah Palin confirmed today that her new baby has Down syndrome. Palin was back at work, holding a meeting on the natural gas pipeline three days after giving birth to her fifth child, when she and her husband Todd showed the baby to reporters.
Testing during early pregnancy revealed the condition, the governor said.
“When we first heard, it was kind of confusing,” Palin, 44, said. She called the revelation “very, very challenging” and said she initially felt sad.
But the family has worked through that. Palin said she and Todd feel blessed and chosen by God. With a big family including four older kids, grandparents, aunts and uncles, Palin said, they will have lots of support for what’s ahead. In their eyes, she said, “he’s absolutely perfect.”
… In a letter she e-mailed to relatives and close friends Friday after giving birth, Palin wrote, “Many people will express sympathy, but you don’t want or need that, because Trig will be a joy. You will have to trust me on this.” She wrote it in the voice of and signed it as “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.”
“Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world you live in down there on Earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome,” Palin wrote.
Palin has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential nominee on the McCain ticket. Earlier post here.

Hi Sarah,
Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful little boy! My husband and I have a 19 month old with Down Syndrome and he is a hoot! I too was sad at first and waited to see what was different about him, then I finally realized, he is no different than his older brother. Bless you and your family and Trig! He will bring you and his siblings much joy! Every milestone he hits will be a victory for cheers!
You and John McCain have our votes.

Hi Sarah,
When I saw that you were John McCain’s running mate, I was elated!!! I was a stay-at-home mom who home schooled two children. After some thought, I am wondering how will your children be taken care of when you are on the campaign trail and, I am hopeful, when you are the Vice-President? I was waivering on the voting issue, even though I am a Republican, on who to vote for. I am definitely not thrilled with Obama so thought I would “just vote” for McCain. I was at my parents this past weekend, who are 88 and 82, and, after seeing who John’s running mate is, will be voting for him!
I am very proud of who you are and what you stand for and wil be voting for you and John McCain. You have accomplished a lot as a person and woman.
Thank you for stepping up to the plate!!

I have always referred to my ten yr old daughter, as Gods Great Gift, or my unexpected joy. She too has Down Syndrome and Autism.
There will be joyous times and times filled with tears, but with the family of supporters out there, you get thru’ the rain using your umbrella of love.
