Source: Alaska governor’s baby has Down syndrome

April 20th, 2008

Associated Press on KTUU -TV (NBC affiliate) in Anchorage. Earlier AP story here.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave birth to her fifth child Friday, and an unnamed source close to the family says the baby boy has Down syndrome. The governor’s spokeswoman would neither confirm nor deny the report, and said the governor will talk with reporters early in the week.

A news release from Palin’s office says the 44-year-old governor and the baby are doing well and resting comfortably.

“Trig is beautiful and already adored by us,” the Palin family said in a statement. “We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.”

    1. why would one bring a 4 month old child, any child, to a convention with thousands of people and millions of germs??

    2. since she is pro-life, what was the point of taking a chance with hurting the unborn child by having an amnio when no matter what, she wouldn’t abort??

    3. having had a child with Down syndrome (14 years old now), I am amazed and supportive of her decision to run for vice president (I didn’t say I would vote for her though!!). I know that I, myself, would not have emotionally been able to do that.

What an opportunity to show the world that we are like everyone else. Life goes on. I am not sure Palin understands the challenge her family will face mainly with social bias and government (schools and adult severces) lack of support. It sure would be nice to have a champion in the White House to support our cause. The current administration has done a lot of harm to services, cuts to medicaid, not funding social security staffing, and I fear that continued Republican role in the White House. But I hope the disability advocates play this opportunity up.

  3. Ralph Canles Says:

Palin’s first priority should be her son Trig. America doesn’t need Palin, Trig needs his mom. What a selfish act on McCain’s part. What happened to family values?
