Airport is failing passengers with disabilities, lawsuit says
April 14th, 2008From the Detroit Free Press:
Metro Airport and Northwest Airlines dropped disabled passengers to the floor, failed to provide boarding assistance to the disabled, damaged wheelchairs by tossing them in baggage storage and failed to provide an area for seeing-eye dogs to relieve themselves, a lawsuit filed today in Detroit says.
Five disabled travelers sued the Wayne County Airport Authority and Northwest Airlines in U.S. District Court in Detroit. The suit seeks no monetary damages, but asks that the airport and Northwest follow basic federal laws and rules.

I have flown in and out of Detroit via Northwest Airlines many times. It is without question the worst airport in the nation in terms of assisting disabled passengers on and off their aircraft. I am always delayed by painfully slow service.
The “trained” personnel assigned to help disabled passengers are often rude and lack the most rudimentary knowledge. In fact, if I am going to Detroit with Northwest I tell the flight crew on takeoff that I will not tolerate a substantial delay. If delayed, I will crawl off the plane rather than wait more than an hour for assistance from people who are rude and thoughtless.
Northwest knows the services provided to disabled passengers are substandard, and the company has been repeatedly fined. Northwest should be ashamed.
