1,000 gather at conference in Utah

The [Salt Lake City] Deseret Morning News reports on a speech by Paddy Ladd, author of “Understanding Deaf Culture, in Search of Deafhood” at an international symposium at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah.

About 1,000 people, most of them deaf or hard-of-hearing, were encouraged to rise up out of oppression and create change.

“We need more deaf people in leadership positions and in positions of power in order to be making some of those crucial decisions” that affect the deaf community, Ladd said through an interpreter.

See related story here. The mother of a girl with a hearing impairment has complained to the U.S. Department of Justice that Brigham Young University is discriminating against her daughter. The reason: BYU’s stadium does not have equipment that would allow her daughter to enjoy an upcoming concert featuring Disney star Miley Cyrus.
