UN charter on disabled rights to come into force
April 5th, 2008From the Associated Press in the International Herald Tribune:
A U.N. convention to protect the rights of the world’s 650 million people with disabilities will come into force next month, the U.N. rights chief said Friday.
Ecuador’s approval Thursday brings to 20 the number of countries that have ratified the charter, meaning it will become legally binding May 3.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of this groundbreaking convention, which fills an important gap in international human rights legislation affecting millions of people around the world,” U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said.
