Critical praise for ‘Autism: The musical’

March 25th, 2008

It’s on HBO tonight, 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific times, 7 Central.

Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times:

… the story of a group of autistic children puttin’ on a show blows open not only the definition of “normal” but its relevance. You will watch the final credits struck to the heart by the incalculable and invaluable variations of human experience.

Mark A. Perigard, Boston Herald:

This documentary from the Bunim/Murray Productions (the same company behind MTV’s “The Real World”) pulls back the curtain on a widely misunderstood world.

Neil Genzlinger, New York Times:

[The fim] exposes you to a story that is not feel-good at all, but instead is full of stress and frustration and despair. It’s the story of what it’s like to be the parent of a child with autism or any other serious disability, a tale that deserves to be told even if it is difficult to watch.

Ellen Gray, Philadelphia Daily News:

“Autism: The Musical” [is] a film that goes beyond awareness, to something approaching understanding.

Also, in U.S. News & World Report, an interview with Elaine Hall, the acting coach in Los Angeles whose work is featured in the documentary. Her message: “Every child has a talent and can learn to fly.”
