Man fired for unbought snack goes back to work
March 24th, 2008From the Washington Post:
A worker with disabilities who was fired from a Safeway store in Maryland — for neglecting to pay for the doughnut and milk he consumed on his break — returned to work a day after signing an agreement with the supermarket chain.
Michael Holland, 37, resumed employment with Safeway at a store in Rockville after being off the job for 11 weeks. He was suspended from a Safeway in Damascus after a manager asked him to show a receipt for his $1.78 morning snack, and Holland said he had forgotten to pay for it.
Holland, who has physical disabilities and a slowness in cognitive processing, signed statements admitting to the offense. He was ordered to pay for the food, fined $50 and fired in a one-sentence letter that arrived almost seven weeks after the incident.
… On March 1, as The Washington Post was preparing a story on the incident, Safeway officials said they would make an exception for Holland because of his disabilities and longtime service.
