Late abortions in Britain up 44 percent in less than a decade

March 9th, 2008

From the [UK] Telegraph:

According to a report in the Sunday Telegraph, almost 3,000 late abortions were carried out on women who were at least 20 weeks pregnant, according to the latest annual figures in England and Wales.

Less than a quarter were because of a risk of disability. The vast majority were for what were called “lifestyle” reasons.

The figures come amid rising debate over the current 24-week time limit for legal abortions in Britain. Terminations as late as 39 weeks — virtually full term — are permitted if the fetus is thought to have a “serious disability,” but the law includes no definition of the word “serious.” A full term pregnancy is 40 weeks.
