Gary Bauer links Baghdad bombings to abortion debate at home
February 14th, 2008Writing in Humanevents.com, one-time presidential hopeful and conservative evangelical leader Gary Bauer says the apparent use of two women with Down syndrome as homicide bombers in Baghdad should be considered in the same light as the widespread use of abortion when Down syndrome is diagnosed prenatally in the United States. An excerpt:
We rightly recoil at the terrorists’ exploitation of disabled women. But we must remember that even in our own society it is legal to take the lives of innocent disabled human beings. In fact, studies show 9 out of 10 Down Syndrome babies are aborted once their disability is detected.
Conservatives have, for over a generation, recognized that there is a cultural battle taking place over the values that shape our nation and its institutions. We see the fallout of that crucial engagement in broken families, the suppression of religious freedom and the devastating loss of life through the scourge of abortion.
What has become increasingly clear to me is that these two battlegrounds are inextricably linked, and that they are in fact two fronts in the same war for our survival. What is more, in order to achieve victory in the war against Islamic terrorism, we must simultaneously win the battle for our culture here at home.
Gary Bauer this week endorsed presidential candidate John McCain, citing his position on abortion. From an Associated Press account:
Bauer, former head of the Family Research Council and founder of the Campaign for Working Families, unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination in 2000. He is a well-known abortion opponent who said in a statement that McCain “has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn.”
