Allegations of abuse, neglect skyrocket at Texas institutions

From the Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News:

Texas investigators said there were 482 allegations of abuse at the state’s residential facilities for people with cognitive disabilities during the 2007 fiscal year, and have increased dramatically in the first half of fiscal 2008.

The revelation comes as a legislative committee begins looking into the future of the institutions. Advocates have urged that they be closed to free up funds for more independent living services.

More than 100,000 Texans with disabilities are on waiting lists for community-based care, some for up to 13 years. See earlier posts:
