New year, new hope: Autism speaking through art
January 1st, 2008
American story: inspiring artist
Video from the NBC Today Show:
Seth Chwast doesn’t speak in sentences, but he communicates through his art. He was diagnosed with autism at age 2, and his mother spent many years trying to find a way to unlock the potential she saw in him. An art class at age 20 opened the door. Now Seth is an accomplished artist who sells his work widely.
Correspondent: We usually talk about the challenges of autism. We seldom consider its gifts.
… Seth’s mother, Debra: You may not get what you wanted, but you may get something better that you never even dreamed of.
