Making waves: Swimmer pushes physical limits
December 27th, 2007
From the NBC Today Show, a perceptive and sensitive video feature by correspondent and former NFL star Tiki Barber about athlete Karen Gaffney, who recently swam across Lake Tahoe. Gaffney has Down syndrome. Her purpose was to raise awareness and acceptance of the condition, and to send the message that people with Down syndrome are more like everyone else than they are different.
Gaffney has formed the Karen Gaffney Foundation with the hopes of encouraging inclusion in all levels of society and helping people with Down syndrome push the limits of what they can accomplish. The Today Show accompanies her on a public speaking tour as she gives hope to parents of young children.
See earlier posts about Karen Gaffney here and here, and about Tiki Barber here. Earlier this month, Barber talked about his family’s history of epilepsy.
