Disability advocates sue to keep kids out of institutional school
November 26th, 2007From the Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer (AP):
Disability rights advocates are suing to keep a Washington state school district from transferring eight disabled students out of public school classrooms and into the state-run institution in which they live.
Disability Rights Washington alleges that the planned change violates state and federal laws against discrimination. The Bremerton school district apparently decided it no longer had space to accommodate the students.
“These children are being denied access to school purely because they have disabilities and live at an institution,” said David Carlson, a lawyer for the advocacy group. He said implementation of the plan would erase decades’ worth of work on behalf of children with disabilities.
