Sports access sought for students with disabilities

November 5th, 2007

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Berkeley activist Rick Spittler is pushing for a law that would require public schools to offer track, wheelchair basketball and other sports for children with disabilities. The effort is inspired by Title IX, the 1972 federal legislation that mandates gender equity in federally funded education programs.

Spittler is building a coalition of disability rights activitists, athletes and coaches, and his idea has the support of Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee.
